About
1471 (Horwich) Squadron is the local unit of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, providing young people from Blackrod, Horwich, Westhoughton and the surrounding area with opportunities to develop confidence, leadership, teamwork and practical life skills in a challenging, supportive and rewarding environment. Being an Air Cadet is about far more than simply an interest in aviation. Cadets can take part in a wide range of activities including flying and gliding, adventurous training, fieldcraft, sport, shooting, first aid, drill, leadership training, camps, STEM, space, radio, cyber, drone flying and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. They also have opportunities to develop their knowledge of aviation and aerospace, gain recognised qualifications and take part in community, civic and Royal Air Force events. These activities form part of the wider RAF Air Cadets experience and are designed to build self-confidence, responsibility, teamwork and a sense of achievement. The Squadron welcomes young people from a wide range of backgrounds and no previous military or aviation experience is required. Cadets progress at their own pace, developing new skills, working towards qualifications and badges, taking on greater responsibility and, for those who want to, progressing into cadet leadership roles. As part of the wider Royal Air Force Air Cadets, 1471 Squadron combines the traditions and values associated with the Royal Air Force with modern youth development, giving young people experiences, friendships and opportunities that can stay with them well beyond their time as a cadet.
