Bolton Neighbourhood Watch is a local network of volunteers helping to make our communities safer, stronger and more connected. We bring neighbours together, share practical crime prevention advice, support local communities and work with partners to help prevent crime and antisocial behaviour. We’re about people, not just crime — looking out for each other and making Bolton a better place to live. Together.
About
Bolton Neighbourhood Watch is a volunteer-led organisation working to make our communities safer, stronger and more connected. Neighbourhood Watch is not part of Greater Manchester Police. Our only link to police forces across the country is as a partner organisation. We cannot take reports of crime or anti-social behaviour and these should be reported directly to GMP on 999 if the crime is ongoing or there is immediate risk to person or property, or for non emergencies via 101/livechat to report incidents and suspicious activity. As part of the wider Neighbourhood Watch movement across England and Wales, Bolton Neighbourhood Watch supports local Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators, members, supporters and communities across the Bolton area. Membership of Neighbourhood Watch is FREE and registration can be completed at https://members.ourwatchmember.org.uk/Join Our role is about much more than crime. We help bring people together, encourage neighbours to look out for one another, share practical crime prevention advice and help communities become more resilient and connected. Supporting Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators Our Coordinators are at the heart of Neighbourhood Watch. They give their time to help their neighbours and communities, often fitting their volunteering around work, family and other commitments. Bolton Neighbourhood Watch provides practical support to Coordinators, helping them establish and develop local schemes. This can include: Providing advice and guidance to new and existing Coordinators. Helping communities set up new Neighbourhood Watch schemes. Providing Neighbourhood Watch window stickers and promotional materials. Supporting the provision of Neighbourhood Watch signs where appropriate. Sharing crime prevention information, campaigns and useful resources. Helping Coordinators promote Neighbourhood Watch within their communities. Supporting local events, community activities and engagement opportunities. Keeping Coordinators informed about relevant local and national developments. We recognise that volunteers cannot attend every meeting or respond to every issue, but we aim to be there to support communities when we can. Bringing neighbours together Neighbourhood Watch is fundamentally about people, not just crime. A strong community is one where neighbours know each other, look out for one another and feel confident speaking up when something doesn't seem right. We encourage communities to develop activities that bring people together, whether that is a coffee morning, community event, litter pick, residents' meeting or simply getting to know the people who live nearby. These connections can help reduce isolation and loneliness, improve community confidence and make it harder for criminals and those involved in antisocial behaviour to take advantage of an area. Crime prevention and community safety We share practical, easy-to-understand crime prevention advice to help residents reduce the opportunities for crime. This can include advice about protecting homes and vehicles, preventing doorstep crime and scams, keeping personal belongings safe, online safety, antisocial behaviour and personal safety. We also help highlight local issues and priorities so that Coordinators and members can take appropriate preventative action within their communities. Our aim is not to replace the work of the police or other agencies. Instead, we look at what we as volunteers and communities can do to help prevent problems before they happen. Working with police and local partners Bolton Neighbourhood Watch works to build positive relationships with Greater Manchester Police, Bolton Council, community organisations and other local partners. We can help partners reach communities with important information, while also helping to ensure that the concerns and experiences of local residents are heard. By supporting prevention and education, Neighbourhood Watch can help communities take simple steps to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour. This can also help neighbourhood policing teams focus their limited resources on engagement, problem-solving and the issues that require their direct involvement. We believe Neighbourhood Watch should be a supportive partner to policing and other agencies, helping communities play their part in keeping Bolton safe. Sharing information Keeping people informed is an important part of what we do. Through our communications, newsletters, social media and Neighbourhood Alert, we help share relevant crime prevention advice, local information, campaigns, community events and opportunities for residents to get involved. We encourage residents to sign up to Neighbourhood Alert so they can receive messages directly from trusted organisations and partners. We also promote information from local community groups and organisations, helping residents discover what is happening in their area and find opportunities to get involved. Supporting stronger communities Our work isn't only about responding to crime. We want to help communities become places where people feel connected, supported and confident. That might mean helping residents establish a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme, supporting a community event, promoting a local litter pick, sharing advice following a local issue, or simply helping neighbours connect with each other. Sometimes the smallest actions can make the biggest difference. Volunteer-led and community focused Bolton Neighbourhood Watch is led by volunteers who live in and understand the communities they support. We don't claim to have all the answers, and we cannot be everywhere. What we can do is provide knowledge, support, information and connections to help communities take positive action themselves. Our approach is simple: Look out for your neighbours. Look out for your community. Share information. Prevent crime where we can. Work together with our partners. We make this a better place to live.
